Intertwingle

Description

Intertwingle takes place in the future when, as Google CEO Eric Schmidt put it, "every human being on the planet will have access to every piece of information on the planet." Judy Breck uses whimsy to shake us loose from obsolete concepts that are crumbling schools and dumbing down kids. The characters in the stories are thirty-somethings whom we meet living in the future. Howard Rheingold muses in his Foreword: "How might the world of 2030 look if enough people were to understand the possibilities that coming technologies enable, and to create or repurpose our social and political institutions to take full advantage of mobile-learning? What if billions of people were able to attain more of their potential -- something we're going to need in order to solve the problems we've created for ourselves?" Ted Nelson, an information technology prodigy said: "Everything is deeply intertwingled." Judy Breck tells a compelling story where everyone lives happily ever after in the intertwingled mobile tomorrow.

Salt and freshly ground black pepper Chiropterans run wild and Saya comes into her own as a single-minded killing machine! Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for J2EE Technology: Study Guide

Description

This is the first authoritative, authorized study guide for Sun's challenging new Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition Technology exams. Written by the exam's lead developer and assessor, it offers start-to-finish guidance and background for designing effective J2EE architectures -- and comprehensive preparation for all three exam elements you need to pass: Sun's multiple-choice exam, architecture/design project, and essay exam. Sun Microsystems Senior Java Architect Mark Cade begins with an overview of system architecture and its goals -- including structure, behavior, usage, functionality, performance, resilience, reuse, and comprehensibility. Cade shows how to document J2EE architectures through visual models and narratives -- creating System Requirements and System Architecture documents that act as blueprints for the entire development process. He introduces each of Sun's most powerful and useful J2EE architecture patterns; walks you through key security and internationalization issues, presents a full chapter on HTTP and other protocols for distributed systems development; and concludes with a start-to-finish case study. From legacy connectivity to messaging, firewall issues to servlets, the book covers every exam objective -- and every skill needed by J2EE enterprise architects.

Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935) was the unparalleled French chef whose impact on restaurants and high cuisine is still with us. He was also a complicated man-kind yet imperious, food obsessed yet rarely hungry, capable of great passion and inscrutable reserve. In this lushly imagined new novel, N. M. Kelby transports us into Escoffier's private world, weaving a sensual story of food and longing, war and romance. The novel opens near the end of Escoffier's life, as he writes his memoirs. He has witnessed a tumultuous sweep of history from a unique position, and he recounts his days as a cook in the Franco-Prussian War, a chef for the beau monde in Paris and at the London's Savoy, and a confidant of royalty and world leaders. The heart of Escoffier's story, however, lies in his love for two very different women: the famously beautiful and reckless actress Sarah Bernhardt, one of the most adored women of her day, and his wife, the independent and sublime poet Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for J2EE Technology: Study Guide download epub Delphine Daffis, whose hand in marriage Escoffier gambled for, only to live apart from her for much of his career. Now Escoffier has retired and returned to Delphine.

The Flame within : Memoir of a Firefighter

Description

A former City of Milwaukee firefighter, the author writes his memoir with candor, depth, spice and emotional insight. He lays out the tumultuous events that led him as a youth into the profession, and the wealth of eye-opening experiences along the way. He plumbs the character of the firefighters and paramedics who answer the call for rescue--but also the character of those who make the call, the rescuer and the rescued. The author keeps the reader close with vivid details of fighting fire and dealing with the anguish of loss and destruction. He pulls no punches; he also describes the promotion process, the politics in stations and in the service as a whole, the struggle of teaching young firefighters, and the heavy price of dedication. The book fully displays the humanity of members of the fire service and the flavor of fire service tradition.

Christopher B. Barrett,Peter Little,Michael Carter: Understanding and Reducing Persistent Poverty in Africa

Understanding and Reducing Persistent Poverty in Africa

Description

Prior work has shown that there is a significant amount of turnover amongst the African poor as households exit and enter poverty. Some of this mobility can be attributed to regular movement back and forth in response to exogenous variability in climate, prices, health, etc. ('churning'). Other crossings of the poverty line reflect permanent shifts in long-term well-being associated with gains or losses of productive assets or permanent changes in asset productivity due, for example, to adoption of improved technologies or access to new, higher-value markets. Distinguishing true structural mobility from simple churning is important because it clarifies the factors that facilitate such important structural change. Conversely, it also helps identify the constraints that may leave other households caught in a trap of persistent, structural poverty. The papers in this book help to distinguish the types of poverty and to deepen understanding of the structural features and constraints that create poverty traps. Such an understanding allows communities, local governments and donors to take proactive, effective steps to combat persistent poverty in Africa. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.

This is the 4th edition of "Nosh for Students", a book originally inspired by the author's son, Ben, who left for university with no cooking skills. Toasted sandwiches and Mars bars were his staple diet, but these didn't serve him too well! What was needed to encourage him to cook was an easily attainable taste of home, oh, and pictures with every recipe! "Nosh for Students" was born. Since then, Joy has helped over 200,000 students get cooking with her straightforward and simple approach. Joy helps to take the chore out of cooking, giving students a taste of success and making the experience so much fun. The message of comfort contained in this little book is an inspired statement of hope and belief. Millions of bereaved people over the years have drawn Fraudsters and Charlatans : A Peek at some of History's Greatest Rogues pdf from it serenity, acceptance, and the ability to face life after the death of a loved one, and for those wishing to convey sympathy but unable to find the right words, it says it all.

Fraudsters and Charlatans : A Peek at some of History's Greatest Rogues

Description

In 1817 a young woman of exotic appearance was found wandering near Bristol. She spoke in a language that no one could understand except, seemingly, a Portuguese sailor. He claimed that she was a Sumatran princess from the island of Javasu. Princess Caraboo, as she was known, became a national celebrity and lived in a grand style, entertaining many distinguished visitors. A few weeks later, however, she was exposed as Mary Baker, the daughter of a cobbler from Devonshire. Mary's deception is one of several intriguing stories of nineteenth-century fraudsters brought to light in Linda Stratmann's entertaining look at some of history's greatest rogues. From bankers who forged share certificates, ruining hundreds of small investors, to `Louis de Rougemont' whose tales of high adventure branded him The Greatest Liar on Earth', these riveting tales of true crime expose the seedy side of life in which corruption, avarice and scandal hold sway.

The Lost City of Stoke-on-Trent

Description

This is a song for Stoke: a fanfare for one of the great cities of the world's first industrial revolution; a lament for the bottle kilns and pot banks, the terraces and mansions that were thrown up or carefully planned to house a global industry and then torn down in the 1960s; and the ballad of a remarkable city - how she was born, how she grew and behaved as a big, bold grown up and how she crumbled as she grew old but, surprisingly, never died. This is not a guide book but an invitation to explore and discover a (deeply flawed) treasure trove Matthew Rice's detailed - and often funny - architectural watercolours are the basis of this book, but those bones are fleshed out with a narrative of the place: the towering figures of the eighteenth century, Wedgwood, Spode and Brindley; the geological underpinning of coal and clay that fixed its position; the trade with America with cargos mapping the great marches west across the prairies of the New World; the reports of unspeakable humanitarian horrors that sent a thrilling shudder through the drawing rooms of Victorian Britain and the changes those reports brought about; and the sad decline and mismanagements that all but destroyed the city after the second World War. The foreword is written by Matthew's wife Emma Bridgewater, whose first visit to Stoke twenty five years ago inspired her to start a business that still employs over one hundred people in a Victorian factory in the heart of the city.

The Pursuit of Italy: A History of a Land, Its Regions, and Their Peoples

Description

A provocative, entertaining account of Italy's diverse riches, its hopes and dreams, its past and presentDid Garibaldi do Italy a disservice when he helped its disparate parts achieve unity? Was the goal of political unification a mistake? The question is asked and answered in a number of ways in "The Pursuit of Italy," an engaging, original consideration of the many histories that contribute to the brilliance and weakness of Italy today. David Gilmour's wonderfully readable exploration of Italian life over the centuries is filled with provocative anecdotes as well as personal observations, and is peopled by the great figures of the Italian past from Cicero and Virgil to the controversial politicians of the twentieth century. His wise account of the Risorgimento debunks the nationalistic myths that surround it, though he paints a sympathetic portrait of Giuseppe Verdi, a beloved hero of the era.Gilmour shows that the glory of Italy has always lain in its regions, with their distinctive art, civic cultures, identities, and cuisines. Italy's inhabitants identified themselves not as Italians but as Tuscans and Venetians, Sicilians and Lombards, Neapolitans and Genoese. Italy's strength and culture still come from its regions rather than from its misconceived, mishandled notion of a unified nation."

Exploring Midsomer: The Towns and Villages at the Murderous Heart of England

Description

Since it was first broadcast on British television in 1997, Midsomer Murders has become one of the most-beloved detective dramas on television, instantly recognisable for its attractive backdrop at the heart of rural England. The real towns and villages of 'Midsomer' are situated in the Chilterns, the Thames Valley and the Vale of Aylesbury, all areas of outstanding natural beauty, and this illustrated book reveals the many stunning key locations for this popular show. Over forty towns and villages have appeared in the long-running television series, ranging from the hill-top village of Brill (also famous for a real crime, the 'Great Train Robbery') to Waddesdon, home of a Rothschild's manor. Chris Behan, a resident of this area for over thirty years, has used his skill and intimate knowledge of the subject to create a book that is a must for fans of Midsomer Murders and all those who love this charming part of rural England.

Many birds make long journeys twice each year as they migrate between their winter and summer homes. Arctic terns fly more than 10,000 miles from the South Pole to northern Maine. Tiny little hummingbirds fly nonstop over the ocean for 500 miles. How do they know which way to fly? Why don't they get lost? Read and find out the many ideas scientists have come up with to explain this mystery. The Great Conjunction is at hand in this dramatic second volume of Archaia and The Jim Henson Company's trilogy of prequel graphic novels that tell the origin of The Dark Crystal. Aughra, the beloved guardian of Thra, has gone into hiding, while her son, Raunip, leads a team of emissaries to the Crystal Castle. There they will bear witness as the visiting Urskeks attempt to use the Conjunction to power their voyage home. But pain and mistrust fostered by the group leads to events that will corrupt the world to its very core and transform the Urskeks into two distinct races: the gentle urRu and the terrifying Skeksis. Brian Froud, legendary fantasy artist and conceptual Exploring Midsomer: The Towns and Villages at the Murderous Heart of England free ebook designer of Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal film, returns to oversee this crucial chapter that reveals the tragic events that caused the Bright Crystal to darken and shatter.

Simone Weil's the Iliad or the Poem of Force: A Critical Edition

Description

Simone Weil, a brilliant young teacher, philosopher, and social activist, wrote the essay, "The 'Iliad' or the Poem of Force" at France at the beginning of World War II. Her profound meditation on the nature of violence provides a remarkably vivid and accessible testament of the Greek epic's continuing relevance to our lives. This celebrated work appears here for the first time in a bilingual version, based on the text of the authoritative edition of the author's complete writings. An introduction discusses the significance of the essay both in the evolution of Weil's thought and as a distinctively iconoclastic contribution to Homeric studies. The commentary draws on recent interpretations of the "Iliad" and examines the parallels between Weil's vision of Homer's warriors and the experiences of modern soldiers.

The human soul must feel this coming as its own extinguishing. Sensing this self-extinguishing is followed by the right to re-create oneself anew from the outer world that has been absorbed.... "I am 'I.'"Rudolf Steiner made it his task to teach nothing that he had not experienced himself and always encouraged others to make individual spiritual-meditative research the basis of their spiritual lives. Therefore he gave many spiritual exercises to his pupils who asked for them. This was especially the case during the period of the Esoteric School (1904-1914), which closed with the outbreak of World War I, which made a certain kind of esoteric work impossible. Steiner, however, continued to give individuals exercises and meditations in private conversations until 1924, when his health no longer allowed it. Usually he would write all instructions out by hand. A few were communicated verbally. Although every exercise originated in a particular context, he believed that because the same conditions apply to all who take up this path of training, in principle the exercises should be available in the widest possible context. Beginning with general rules and conditions (the so-called supplementary exercises), meditations for the days of the week, and morning and evening exercises, "Soul Exercises" collects all of the word and symbol meditation exercises Steiner gave. This includes nine groups of exercises based on Mabel Collins Light on the Path and a multitude of exercises with individually composed meditative verses. The book concludes with explanations and contextual commentary relating to the exercises, including notes on the value of symbolic ideas on the path of spiritual schooling; the Rose Cross meditation; the verse More radiant than the Sun; the backward review ("Ruckshau"); contemplation of one s own divine ideal; and alcohol and diet."Soul Exercises" is an essential help to all who take up the anthroposophic path of inner work. This volume is a translation from German of "Seelenubungen: Band I. The Cold War has entered a moribund phase, but the fight goes on, especially in the cultural sphere. Serena, a compulsive reader of novels, is sent on a 'secret mission' which brings her into the literary world of Tom Healey, a promising young writer. First she loves his stories, then she begins to love the man. Can she maintain the fiction of her undercover life? And who is inventing whom? To answer these questions, Serena must abandon the first rule of espionage - trust no one. Twelve is cool, cruel and utterly compulsive. 'Bret Easton Ellis territory...an extraordinary assured debut' Harper & Queen 'McDonell is an authentic talent and, long after the storms of hype have died away, his novel will endure as a snapshot of his generation' Observer 'Consistently brilliant...One of the most exciting new writers around' Independent on Sunday 'A brilliant satirical debut' Time Out 'A compulsive elegy to wasted, privileged youth, lives up to the hype...lean, elegant and bleakly witty' Elle

The prophetic Mayan calendar is not keyed to the movement of planetary bodies. Instead, it functions as a metaphysical map of the evolution of consciousness and records how spiritual time flows--providing a new science of time. The calendar is associated with nine creation cycles, which represent nine levels of consciousness or Underworlds on the Mayan cosmic pyramid. Through empirical research Calleman shows how this pyramidal structure of the development of consciousness can explain things as disparate as the common origin of world religions and the modern complaint that time seems to be moving faster. Time, in fact, is speeding up as we transition from the materialist Planetary Underworld of time that governs us today Twelve download book to a new and higher frequency of consciousness--the Galactic Underworld--in preparation for the final Universal level of conscious enlightenment. Calleman reveals how the Mayan calendar is a spiritual device that enables a greater understanding of the nature of conscious evolution throughout human history and the concrete steps we can take to align ourselves with this growth toward enlightenment.

Nori Graham,Dr. James Warner: Understanding Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias

Description

Dementia is a term used to describe any condition where a variety of different brain functions such as memory, thinking, recognition, language, planning and personality deteriorate over time. Dementia is not part of normal ageing. Everyone gets more forgetful as they get older – that does not mean that they have dementia. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are several other types. There is a lot of myth and misinformation about dementia. This book is intended for anyone who has, or may be worried that they or their family and friends have, dementia. It is also for people who live or work with someone with dementia. We hope that by reading this book you will have a better understanding of what causes the illness and how it is diagnosed and treated.

The answer is NOT to depend on prescription and over-the-counter stomach acid drugs that can cause serious health complications. James Dunn is regarded worldwide as one of today's foremost biblical scholars. Having written groundbreaking studies of the New Testament and a standard work on Paul's theology, Dunn here turns his pen to the rise of Christianity itself. "Jesus Remembered" is the first installment in what will be a monumental three-volume history of the first 120 years of the faith. Focusing on Jesus, this first volume has several distinct features. It garners the lessons to be learned from the "quest for the historical Jesus" and meets the hermeneutical challenges to a historical and theological assessment of the Jesus tradition. It provides a fresh perspective both on the impact made by Jesus and on the traditions about Jesus as oral tradition -- hence the title "Jesus Remembered." And it offers a fresh analysis of the details of that tradition, emphasizing its characteristic (rather than dissimilar) features. Noteworthy too are Dunn's treatments of the source question (particularly Q and the noncanonical Gospels) and of Jesus the Jew in his Galilean context. In his detailed analysis of the Baptist tradition, the kingdom motif, the call to and character of discipleship, what Jesus' audiences thought of him, what he thought of himself, why he was crucified, and how and why belief in Jesus' resurrection began, Dunn engages wholeheartedly in the contemporary debate, providing many important insights and offering a thoroughly convincing account of how Jesus was remembered from the first, and why. Written with peerless scholarly acumen yet accessible to a wide range of Understanding Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias free download pdf readers, Dunn's "Jesus Remembered," together with its successor volumes, will be a "sine qua non" for all students of Christianity's beginnings.
